The Dyson Story

James Dyson used a vacuum cleaner and was disappointed with the equipment's inefficiency due to the lack of suction power. So he sought out ways to solve the problem and discovered that cyclonic power could suck in dirt without clogging the equipment. This triggered him to try and apply this technology on a smaller scale. The first equipment he built for the ball barrow factory he worked for was shunned, and he was eventually fired. Dyson sought a loan for his cyclonic vacuum development. The amount he got covered was just 51%, while the rest came from an investment. He designed and created over 5,000 prototypes between 1979 and 1984. His first prototype vacuum achieved modest success, but he couldn’t get a licensee for the product in America and the UK. The reason was that manufacturing companies saw Dyson as a threat to their commercial success in the market.

In 1985, Apex Ltd, a Japanese company, showed interest in licensing Dyson design and produced a reworked version, becoming a huge success in Japan. Dyson used the earnings from the licensing to start Dyson Appliances Ltd in 1991. However, the company was incorporated as Barletta Limited. In 2001, the DC01, a vacuum cleaner designed and manufactured by Dyson Appliances Ltd, became the best-selling vacuum cleaner in the UK market and even made up 47% of the upright vacuum market. The company later expanded its product catalogue to include other household appliances.
