Pros & Cons

  • Constantly learning new things, the benefits, the globally recognised brand.
  • I work with great people who are incredibly talented. Nobody is unwilling to help, and they are all top performers with a wealth of knowledge and diverse experience. As such, I've benefited from learning on the job with incredible support this year from both non-technical and technical expertise, from all departments of the company. This doesn't just limit itself to formal business engagements, but my colleagues have been incredibly generous with their time. I've had many coffee chats with different levels of leadership where I have received priceless career and life advice. This again comes back to the great talent and diverse experience that makes up the workforce at Amazon.
  • The interview process was positive. Nice people who gave their time to also tell me about their job and time. The emphasis on experience and diverse experience was appreciated and that was why I wanted to work here. Getting results from interviews back took a long time.
  • Engaging customers, trying to identify their problems and connect them with the village of Amazonians that have the expertise to solve those problems. This means calling customers, hosting meetings, preparing experts with customer information for those meetings and collating compelling narratives around a problem or solution from our thousands of customer references. It also means connecting with the Amazon Partner Network - learning about our partners, their offerings and other opportunities or relationships with our customers.
  • Amazon has many small teams, so cooperation and teamwork are built into the hierarchy and culture, and people are amazingly helpful. Rarely has someone said, "No, I can't help."
  • Sometimes long hours due to working across timezones
  • Lack of rotation in graduate program
  • Something I need to adapt to is a "scrappy" way of working. To ensure Amazon still innovates like a start-up, even though it is the size of a conglomerate, Amazon has taken on this "day 1" approach, where every day we have a start-up mindset. This is operationalized in a "scrappy" way of working, whereby we test, re-iterate and have a bias for action. The flip side of this is that some programs and systems are not initially well thought out, and there is sometimes duplicate or conflicting information from different teams working on the same problem. Navigating this properly requires a mindset shift.
  • Flat hierarchy
  • Resume screening; online assessment (coding and behaviour simulation); single hour-long interview; four hour-long interviews.

Culture
Due to hybrid work, there tends to be a bit of "meet in passing" that occurs. Rarely do we get together for in-person team building. There are people who come in regularly on certain days, and that builds a good office culture. Our team have gotten together in person to do team lunches etc. and those are a highlight. A few times after hours we have also gone out as a team to meet in a more social setting. Amazon has many small teams, so cooperation and teamwork are built into the hierarchy and culture, and people are amazingly helpful. Rarely has someone said, "No, I can't help."

Diversity

Diversity
Within my org, out of about 50 engineers, there are 2 women (including me). The gender diversity in my org is particularly terrible. I haven't seen any efforts within my org to fix this (which does not necessarily mean nothing is happening). The org is very racially diverse and we go out of our way to celebrate many different cultural events and to make sure that all communities feel welcome.

I had 3 months to learn at the beginning of my job. Very generous. And there are always ongoing learning opportunities.
